Everyone knows, together with a heavier guide rod (that can help fight muzzle flip and stabilize the gun) a compensator is one of the best Glock upgrades you can make that will cut back on felt recoil.
Paired with a threaded Glock barrel, a good compensator can cut felt recoil by as much as 30% to 50%, and can help you make faster, more accurate follow up shots, all while lessening shooter fatigue that arises and compounds itself as a result of stiff recoil.
But there is a better option, in the form of one of our Vapor Glock ported barrel and slide combos, compatible with Glock 17 and 19 pistols. Here are 5 good reasons one of these Glock upgrades is better than a simple compensator.
Superior Recoil Reduction
Like a compensator, a Glock ported barrel and slide combo will offer recoil reduction, somewhere in the area of 30% to 50%, the same as in the area of a compensator. But the design of a matched, ported barrel and slide is better than just a compensator alone.
You see, a ported barrel, in lieu of a compensator, would offer comparable recoil reduction. But a ported barrel alone might trap some gas under the slide, which would result in a lot of fouling accumulation and potentially accelerated corrosion and wear.
The same might happen with a compensator, depending on how well it was matched to the gun, and how fastidious the operator was with respect to maintenance. But one of our Vapor matched-ported Glock barrel and slide combos is engineered to avoid the very issue mentioned.
Matched porting releases gasses more efficiently, preventing an easily avoidable accumulation of fouling, and most importantly, reducing mass by removing stock material from both the barrel and slide. A compensator adds mass; a matched, ported barrel and slide reduces reciprocating mass, which further reduces recoil.
Better Matching, Tighter Tolerances
Like other NineX19 parts, our Glock ported barrel and slide combos are CNC-machined in the United States and exhibit uncompromisingly tight tolerances for fit and finish. You won’t believe it’s not stock – at least, with respect to finish; in terms of performance and aesthetics, it’s far superior.
Because we make both the barrels and slides, we can guarantee and uphold a higher level of quality than you might get if you gambled on another aftermarket provider – just one more reason that a matched, ported barrel and slide, specifically from us, is better than just a compensator.
Splitting the Sight Picture

Some compensators vent gasses directly upward at the muzzle, which is a blessing and a curse.
It’s a blessing because this vent configuration redirects the maximum amount of felt recoil directly down on the muzzle, keeping muzzle flip to a minimum and working, mechanically, to fight against recoil as hard as possible.
But it is also a curse because, despite its efficiency at mitigating recoil and muzzle flip, venting gasses directly upwards also completely hazes out your sight picture. Hot gasses will completely obstruct whatever you’re looking at over the sights, and at the worst, and most critical, moment.
If you take a look at our Glock ported barrel and slide combos, you will see that the matched porting on the barrels and slides are offset at a 45° angle, which splits around the sights and the sight picture, rather than obstructing them.
This, critically, keeps the sight picture clear at the moment of firing and immediately after, so you can make faster, more accurate follow up shots – and along with a reduction in recoil, is one of the most impactful advantages that can be offered.
Add an Optic
Like our other Glock slides, our ported barrel and slide combos are “combat cut” for RMR-pattern optics, so you can easily upgrade your favorite Glock pistol with an RDS or reflex sight (assuming compatibility) if you so wish.
Doing so will give you the opportunity to co-witness your sights and fire effectively, even in low-light conditions, more confidently and more accurately, without the necessity of aligning your Glock sights, which can be stressful and difficult in high-stakes situations.
Cool Factor
Lastly, there’s something magnetic about making your favorite Glock pistol reflect your preferences, whether you shoot competitively or only carry it for defensive purposes. Either way, adding a new slide or barrel to it, especially one with an attractive gold-tone finish, is a great way to customize the gun, and one which will carry other benefits, as enumerated here.
